Filmed in my hometown community of Woodside, Clarendon, Jamaica, the film intertwines a visual visitation to the people, places and things tied to a fading period in time and my memory; a story of my late grandmother in the last weeks before her death, being visited by the spirit of her unborn first child in physical form. Intertwined with re-imaginations of my past matrilineage, the film acts as a bridge between body and memory, a tie that exists “within the flesh”.
I owe much credit to the land and people of my hometown village, Woodside, who are documented in this film and who I’ve held in such high regard my whole life. Greatly fitting as my BFA thesis, Within The Flesh honors what I’d continually desired in my life, which was to memorialize the place, the people, and the stories that shaped me.
